Overview

Located in the western part of Nepal, near the border with Tibet, Himlung Himal is a prominent mountain peak popular in the Annapurna region. It stands at an elevation of 7,126 m (23,379 feet) with a rewarding climbing experience and exceptional scenic view.

Himlung Himal passes through the Nar Phu Valley, rich in Tibetan culture. The expedition takes around three or more weeks to complete, including the trek to base camp, acclimatization, and the summit. This allows climbers with a greater timeframe to explore through the exposure of panoramic views of the surrounding peaks and the grandeur of the Himalayas.

As Himlung Himal is located in a restricted area, climbers need to obtain a special permit, which makes this location more exclusive for the climb. Nevertheless, once enrolled for this exciting journey, one shall not regret this unique mountaineering experience.

Itinerary

  • Day 01 - Arrival in Kathmandu (1,400m)

Arrive at Tribhuvan International Airport and transfer to your hotel in Kathmandu. Take the day to relax and recover from your journey. Later, meet the expedition team for a briefing on the route, logistics, and equipment. Enjoy dinner in the city and prepare for the adventure ahead.

  • Day 02 - Expedition preparation & permits

Today is dedicated to issuing restricted area permits and completing expedition paperwork. Your guide will check your climbing gear and assist with any rental needs. You may explore Kathmandu’s cultural sites or shop for last-minute items. A final briefing ensures everything is ready for departure.

  • Day 03 - Drive to Koto (2,600m)

Take a long but scenic drive through lush hillsides, rivers, and terraced fields. Pass through Besisahar and continue along a rugged mountain road to reach Koto. Upon arrival, settle into your lodge, stretch your legs, and enjoy dinner in the chilly mountain air.

  • Day 04 - Trek to Meta (3,560m)

Begin trekking through dense pine forests and cross beautiful bridges along the Naar–Phu trail. As you ascend, the terrain becomes more open and rugged, giving your first glimpse of the wild landscapes ahead. Arrive at Meta and settle into a lodge surrounded by dramatic cliffs and mountain views.

  • Day 05 - Trek to Phu Gaon (4,080m)

Continue through remote canyons, yak pastures, and ancient carved cliffs. The trail gradually ascends toward the culturally rich village of Phu Gaon. Explore stone houses, monasteries, and traditional Tibetan-influenced architecture. The high elevation offers magnificent views of Himlung and surrounding peaks.

  • Day 06 - Acclimatization Day at Phu

Spend the day acclimatizing to the altitude with short hikes around Phu village. Visit Tashi Lakhang Monastery, one of the region’s oldest and most sacred. Explore local culture and observe traditional mountain lifestyles. Rest in the afternoon to prepare for higher climbs.

  • Day 07 - Trek to Himlung Base Camp (4,900m)

Follow a gradual alpine trail along glacial moraines and rocky terrain. As you approach base camp, the landscape opens into a vast high-altitude plateau. Base camp offers spectacular views of Himlung Himal’s towering ridges. Settle into your expedition tents and prepare for the climbing phase.

  • Day 08-15 - Climbing Phase

Over these days, you will establish Camp I, Camp II, and Camp III on the mountain. The route consists of snow slopes, crevasse sections, and long ridgelines requiring fixed ropes. You will follow an acclimatization rotation—climbing up to higher camps and returning to lower ones for rest. When weather and conditions align, the summit push begins before dawn, rewarding you with breathtaking 360° views of the Himalayas before descending safely to base camp. Rest and recover after the summit.

  • Day 16 - Trek back to Meta

After cleaning base camp and packing equipment, begin the descent through the high valley. Retrace your steps toward Meta, enjoying lower altitude and warmer air. Reach Meta for a comfortable night in the lodge.

  • Day 17 - Trek back to Koto & drive to Besisahar

Trek back through forests and suspension bridges to reach Koto. From here, take a jeep drive down to Besisahar. Enjoy a warm shower, good food, and a relaxing evening after many days in the mountains.

  • Day 18 - Drive back to Kathmandu

Take the scenic highway back to Kathmandu, following rivers and terraced landscapes. Check into your hotel and unwind after your expedition. Enjoy a celebratory dinner with your team.
